Theodosius II was the son of
Arcadius
and Eudoxia. Arcadius died May 1st, 408 in his palace at
Constantinople and was succeeded by his 7 year old son
Theodosius II. His sister Pulcheria acted as regent 408 -
416. Pulcheria had a huge influence on the life of the young
Theodosius. She oversaw his education and took a vow of
chastity which she would keep for the remainder of her life,
to ensure that her brother was provided with her full
attention. Theodosius II was extremely well educated and
enjoyed learning. He was adept in using foreign languages,
theology and astrology. Pulchria was a huge influence on his
life and it was she who ensured that Theodosius adhered to
the Christian faith and who instigated the anti-Semitic view
which resulted in the destruction of synagogues. In June 421
Theodosius II married the poet Aelia Eudocia. They had a
daughter, Licinia Eudoxia, whose marriage with the Western
Roman Emperor Valentinian III marked the re-unification of
the two halves of the Empire. The law code of Theodosius II,
summarizing edicts made since the first Christian emperor
Constantine create a fully formalized system of law.
Theodosius II died July, 450 AD as a result of an injury to
his spine that was inflicted during a wild beast hunt. His
brother-in-law, Marcian, succeeded him.
