Gladiators

Fascinating information about the different types of gladiators including the Bestiarii gladiator (gladiators who specialised in beast fighters), the  Retiarii gladiator ( gladiators who carried a trident, a dagger, and a net), the Dimachaeri gladiator ( gladiators who used two-swords, one in each hand) and their clothing.

Types of Gladiators
There were many different types  heavily protected and armored gladiators such as the Gallus (from Gaul), Samnite, Thracian (Thrax), Murmillo, Hoplomachus, Secutor, Provocator or Cataphractarius. The lightly armed gladiators, who wore little armor, so had freedom of movement, included gladiators such as the Retiarius, Dimachaeri or the Laquerarius who would have made good opponents for the heavily armoured gladiators.

Famous Gladiators
Many Roman Emperors enjoyed the spectacles that the Colosseum had to offer and many of the games were financed by the emperors themselves. There was even an Emperor who took great delight in participating in the games held at the Colosseum - the Emperor Commodus - the Emperor featured in the Russell Crowe movie Gladiator. Other famous emperors enjoyed participating in gladiatorial combat. The names of other famous gladiators have been documented by Roman authors and historians and these famous gladiators are all mentioned in this article.

Weapons and Armor worn by Gladiators
The Romans took the best ideas and different types of weapons from the nations that they conquered, making improvements and adjustments as required. There were nearly 30 different types of gladiator who specialised in using specific weapons, armor and shields. The Female Gladiators of Ancient Rome fought in the bloody arenas, including the Roman Colosseum. Female gladiators were called Amazones after the tribe of fierce women warriors that we now refer to as Amazons. Female gladiators were also referred to as gladiatrices.
