Sextus Martinianus from the following facts and information about his life.
On the death of Galerius in 311AD there were four men
calling themselves Emperors -
Licinius I in Asia,
Daza
Maximin in Egypt,
Maxentius
at Rome, and
Constantine
the Great in Gaul. During their joint reigns Licinius
and Constantine were almost continuously at war with each
other. Sextus Martinianus was the magister officiorum at the
court of Licinius I. The magister officiorum was the most
powerful civilian official besides the praetorian prefect. Licinius
decided to replace Constantine (in name only) as western
Augustus. Licinius appointed Sextus Martinianusus as
co-emperor July 3 324. Sextus Martinianusus
working for Licinius went to Lampsacus (in the Dardanelles)
to attack Emperor Constantine as he crossed the Bosporus. Sextus Martinianusus
had little impact on the forces of Constantine and on September
18 324 Licinius was defeated for the last time in the Battle of
Chrysopolis. Sextus Martinianusus was executed on orders
from Constantine, however Licinius was at first spared only
to rebel later in league with the Goths.
