Olybrius from the following facts and information about his life. Olybrius
was an ambitious man with excellent connections. After the
sack of Rome in 455 by the Vandal king Geiseric
Olybrius fled to Constantinople. He was appointed Consul in
464 and then married Placidia who was the daughter of
Emperor Valentinian III and Empress Eudoxia. Leo I, the
Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, who was based in
Constantinople, tried to control Italian affairs through Ricimer,
who was a military leader and the grandson of Wallia, king
of the Visigoths. By
11 July 472 Ricimer had taken Rome and the previous
emperor Anthemius was beheaded. Ricimer then appointed Flavius Anicius Olybrius as
the next emperor. Ricimer, the man behind so many of the
recent emperors, died in August 472 of a malignant fever.
Three months later on
2 November 472 Olybrius died of dropsy.
