Probus from the following facts and information about his life. Why was Probus
famous? Accomplishments, achievements and important
events. As soon as his predecessor Florianus had been
declared emperor the armies and provinces of Phoenicia,
Palestine, Syria and Egypt declared for the brilliant
soldier, Probus. Florianus confronted Probus and his army.
Although the Emperor Florianus had the larger army the
military skills and experience of Probus led the defeat of
Florianus. After a few weeks of fighting, Florianus was
assassinated by his own troops near Tarsus, his successor
was Probus. In the six years of his reign Probus once more
repelled the barbarians from every part of the empire. He
delivered Gaul from the ravages of the Germans, pursued them
across the Rhine, and every where defeated them. Probus also
suppressed several insurrections, and employed his soldiers
in various useful works such as planting vineyards, building
roads and canals and bridges in Egypt . The soldiers
rebelled against the tasks to such an extent that they
proclaimed Marcus Aurelius Carus, commander of the
Praetorian Guard, as the new emperor. Probus was put to
death in September A.D. 282.

Roman emperors who governed the Roman Empire between 268 and
282. Illyria was a region in the western part of
today's Balkan Peninsula. The people for Illyria were renown
for their military prowess and they became an important
source of manpower for the Roman army. Because of their
military strength many of the emperors from this period came
from Illyria.
