Carus the previous emperor was the father of Numerian and
his brother Carinus. Numerian and his older brother
Carinus were raised to the rank of Caesar in AD 282, soon
after their father had become emperor. Carus had gained many
victories over the Persians and Numerian accompanied his
father to the East and Mesopotamia. His brother stayed in
Rome to rule the west. Their father died suddenly in A.D.
283 and his sons Numerian and Carinus, succeeded him as
co-emperors. Numerian was never suited to the military life.
His preferences lay with more intellectual pursuits. Due to
his lack of military skill he was perceived as the 'junior'
emperor. Numerian and his troops left Mesopotamia to return
to Rome. Numerian contracted a serious eye disease which
half blinded him and he was forced to ride in a litter. His
trusted commander Arrius Aper, the prefect of the
praetorians and his father-in-law, was ambitious and took
the opportunity to murder the ailing Numerian. The murder
took place in November 284 at Emesa, a western city in Syria
The murder of Numerian was kept a secret - his body was just
left to rot in the litter. However, the stench from the
rotting corpse could not be ignored and the death of
Numerian became public knowledge. Arrius Aper never achieved
his ambition to become the next emperor and was later put to
death by Diocletian.
